We run across many situations when we want to substitute meat in recipes with healthy, plant-based alternatives. Whether you’re new to plant-based eating or an experienced vegan chef, finding the perfect protein choice can be tricky. So, we’re bringing you five different ways to bring meat alternatives into your own recipes.
1. Hearty Veggie Burgers
Veggie burgers are typically made from variety of plant foods including vegetables, beans, and grains. These work well in place of traditional burgers, but they can be broken up for use in wraps and casseroles.
2. Fiber-Filled Legumes
When we’re looking for a high-fiber protein source, we lean into legumes. Peas, beans, and lentils stand up as a main course, and they also work well as meat alternatives.

3. Savory Mushrooms
Portobello mushrooms bring both a meaty texture and savory flavor. As a result, they’re the perfect meat substitute for grilled burgers or steaks. Cremini mushrooms, also known as Baby Bellas, also work well in lieu or chopped or ground beef.
If you’re looking for a mushroom-based recipe, try our Portobello Mushroom Burgers or these Mushroom Tostadas.
4. Tasty Tofu
As meat substitutes go, soy-based tofu is among the most versatile. Because tofu brings such a mild flavor, it tends to absorb whatever other flavors you bring to the recipe. You’ll find it in many different textures.
For meat substitution, extra firm tofu works best–especially when pressed and marinated.
5. Textured Tempeh
Finally, let’s talk about tempeh. A lesser known ingredient, tempeh is made from fermented soybeans. It brings a meaty texture that works well in curries, chilis, and stir-fries. We most often enjoy tempeh as a bacon swap in BLT sandwiches. Or, should we say TLT sandwiches in this case!
And, there you have it. The next time you want to substitute meat, we hope you’ll try one of these five great meat alternatives. Trying new things in the kitchen is all part of the fun of plant-based eating. So, let’s get creative!
